1837  ..... U.K ..... Mary Ann Aaron of Dewsbury, Yorkshire, was the FIRST name entered in the Birth Register at Somerset House after the Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths came into effect in England and Wales. The Act allowed people to marry in 600 registrar offices  

1858 ..... Charles Darwin FIRST announced his theory of evolution

1877 ..... U.K ..... the St. John Ambulance Brigade FIRST began to teach First-aid and ‘spread ambulance material’ 

1900 ..... GERMANY ..... Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s FIRST airship took flight. It was powered by 2 - 16hp engines and had an anticipated speed of 14 mph. By 1910 they were travelling faster and took on paying customers. However the inflammable nature of the hydrogen caused a number of explosions and deaths, most notably when the Hindenberg exploded in 19??  with the loss of 33 lives 

1907 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST air force, the Aeronautical Division of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the U.S Army, was commanded by Captain Charles de Forest Chandler. The original force consisted of one officer, one NCO and one enlisted man

1912 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Royal Command Performance was held at the Palace Theatre, London 

1922 ..... U.S.A .....  the world’s FIRST shopping centre, the Country Club Plaza, opened in America 

1940  ..... U.K ..... the FIRST contingent of Salford boys left the city for the new camp-school which had been opened at Wiswell, nr Whalley 

1941 ….. U.S.A ..... the FIRST commercial television station, NBC's WNBT NY broadcast its first advert -for a Bulova clock. It had a ten second spot and was aired before a football game

1948 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Oxfam shop opened - Oxford Committee for Famine Relief

1967  ….. U.K ..... on the FIRST day of colour television in Britain, seven hours of  the tennis at Wimbledon were shown 

1974 ..... Isabel Peron became the FIRST woman Head of State in the Americas when her husband, Juan Peron died. She was his third wife and assumed the presidency. However on March 24th 1976 she was overthrown by a military coup and charged with misappropriation of public funds. She was later acquitted ..... and ..... U.S.A ..... Laura Ashley opened her FIRST shop in San Francisco, America 

1979 ..... Sweden became the FIRST country to outlaw hitting children. In 1984 Finland followed suit and then Denmark (1986) Norway (1987) and Austria (1989) 

1991 ..... the Supreme Soviet of USSR approved a law that allowed the sale of state owned enterprises for the FIRST time

1996 ..... the world’s FIRST voluntary euthanasia law took effect in Australia’s Northern Territory. Although Australians can travel from other states to the territory immigration restrictions bar foreigners from going there 

1999 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST parliament in Scotland in 300 years opened with pomp, pageantry and ancient tradition. The first Act to mark the official opening by the Queen was the ceremonial removing of the historic crown of Scotland from Edinburgh Castle

2002 ..... the world's FIRST permanent war crimes tribunal became a reality with support from US allies and nations from every continent. The treaty establishing the International Criminal Court received its crucial 60th U.N ratification on April 11th
