1793 ..... Alexander Mackenzie became the FIRST European to cross Canada from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific

1894 ..... FRANCE ..... the FIRST motor race was held when 21 ‘horseless carriages’ chased each other from Paris to Rouen. ‘Break-neck’ speeds of 11mph were recorded 

1933 ..... U.S.A ..... the one-eyed American aviator, Wiley Post, completed the FIRST round-the-world solo flight. He flew 15,596 miles in seven days in 18 hours and 49 1/2 minutes which lopped hours of the record he had previously set with a co-pilot in 1931. He wore a pressure suit for high-altitude flying. A one-time oil driller he had lost his eye in a drilling accident and had bought his first plane with the compensation money. He died in a plane crash in 1935 with Will Rogers
