1586 ..... U.K ..... tobacco was FIRST introduced to the court of Queen Elizabeth by Sir Walter Raleigh

1752 ..... U.K ..... Manchester's FIRST "publick infirmary" opened in Garden Street, Withy Grove. One of the first patients was 22 year-old John Boardman and the FIRST in-patient was eleven year-old Benjamin Dooley. By the end of the first year 249 outpatients had been treated and 75 had been admitted

1896 ..... U.K ..... Guglielmo Marconi staged the FIRST public transmission of a wireless signal.  Encouraged by Welshman, William Preece, chief engineer at the Post Office, he transmitted from the PO roof to the Savings Bank almost a mile away 

1902 ..... the FIRST cinema opened in Sweden - Arkaden Kino in Gothenburg

1937 ..... Jack and Edna Moran of Seattle, Washington, USA married for the FIRST time on this day. Throughout their married life they repeated the ceremony over 40 times thereby gaining a place in the Guinness Book of Records 

1949 ..... U.K ..... the De Havilland Comet jet air liner had its FIRST flight 

1969 ..... Tom ‘Moby’ McClean became the FIRST man to row solo across the Atlantic from West to East. He set out on May 17th and took 72 days to row from Newfoundland to Blacksod Bay off the coast of Ireland

1991 ..... U.K .....  Jackie Booth became the FIRST skilled female painter and decorator with Tameside Council (Manchester) 

2003 ..... U.K ..... Salford and Manchester (Lancashire) hosted the FIRST ever International Union Triathlon World Cup event to be held in Britain. The race began and ended in front of the Lowry at Salford Quays and took in part of the city centre of Manchester.  The event involved a 1500m swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10k run
