1865 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST meeting of the Salvation Army was held when William Booth conducted a service in an old tent on a disused Quaker burial ground in Whitechapel, in London’s East End. This small beginning resulted in an organisation which eventually spread throughout the world 

1904 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST recorded speedway race was held at Portman Road, Ipswich 

1921 .....  boxings FIRST $m gate was in the fight between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier 

1928 ..... U.K ..... the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act was given the Royal Assent and all women over the age of 21 years were able to vote for the FIRST time. The bill had been passed overwhelmingly on March 29th and a third reading was given on May 7th 

1951 ..... the popular Pilot of the Future from the front page of Eagle, Dan Dare, was FIRST heard on Radio Luxembourg as a daily 15 minute serial. It was sponsored by Horlicks , scripted from Frank Hampson's strips by Geoffrey Webb and announced by Pathe News man Bob Danvers-Walker. The serial ran for 5 years and everything was known about the show by its fans except who played Dan. Not one recording or script is known to exist 

1965 ..... U.K ..... Gaynor Williams of Pendleton, Salford, became the FIRST girl to receive the Humphrey Booth Award. It was awarded annually at the Clarendon Road Girl’s Secondary Modern School in Pendleton to the girl who was academically and also  by character an example to the whole of the school

1973 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Jimmy Young Show aired on BBC radio

1984 ..... U.S.A ..... a Canadian became the FIRST person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. The FIRST person ever to try this stunt was a woman even though she couldn’t swim. Her name was Annie Taylor and she went over the Falls on 24.10.1901 

1991 ..... the ANC, South Africa’s largest anti-apartheid party, held its national conference in Durban, the FIRST inside the country for 32 years 

1993 ..... U.K ..... Helen Dobbs and Keren Cavaciuti, two of Britain’s FIRST female Top Guns received their wings after qualifying as fighter pilots 

1994 ….. U.K ..... Conchita Martinez became the FIRST Spanish woman to win Wimbledon
