Three years earlier a proposal for a tie with ' broad light blue and white stripes', the colours of the School Shooting Eight had been howled down amid protests that it was far too bright for less youthful members of the Association. The more dignified design was a narrow strip of Eton blue between 2 broader black bands. In 1938 the Eton College Chronicle suggested that ' In view of the unflattering comments of Metropolitan magistrates in recent cases, may I suggest the old Etonian should avoid wearing the old school tie when about to appear in the dock'
