1621..... U.K ..... the FIRST greenhouse in Britain was erected in Oxford in preparation for a predicted severe Autumn and Winter

1785 ..... FRANCE ..... the FIRST aeronaut in the world to be killed while ballooning was Francois Pilatre de Rozier whilst he was attempting to fly the English Channel from Boulogne.  Also killed was his companion Jules Romain

1890 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST film review was inspired by the FIRST screen kiss. The movie was The Widow Jones and starred May Irwin and John Rice

1892 ….. U.K ..... the new £50,000 Ladywell Hospital in Salford admitted its FIRST 76 patients.  In the beginning it was a fever hospital used by patients suffering from infectious diseases such as TB and scarlet fever but in the 1940s changed to mainly elderly care.  In 1999 the hospital closed its doors and was transferred to new premises at Hope Hospital called The Ladywell Building

1920 ..... U.K ..... Dame Nellie Melba was the FIRST radio star when she broadcast from the Marconi Company’s station at Chelmsford. Music was broadcast for the FIRST time from England by wireless telephone all over Europe and on ships at sea and listeners tuned in to hear the great operatic star

2005 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST legally recognised Humanist wedding in the UK took place when Martin Reijns and Karen Watts were married in Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland
