1781 ..... U.K ..... the planet Uranus was FIRST discovered by the astronomer, Sir William Herschel. The following year he was appointed private astronomer to George 111 and continued his studies at Slough near Windsor assisted by his sister Caroline. He also discovered two satellites of Saturn, the rotation of Saturn’s rings and the period of rotation of Saturn besides adding greatly to further knowledge of the solar system 

1852 ..... U.S.A ..... the New York 'Lantern' newspaper published the FIRST 'Uncle Sam' cartoon which was drawn by Frank Henry Bellew

1894 ..... FRANCE ..... the FIRST professional striptease was performed at the Divan Fayouau Music Hall in Paris. Young ladies removed their garments in acts with such saucy titles as " Le Coucher d'Yvette" " Suzanne et la Grand Chaleur" and " La Puce" ( the flea) in which a girl flings off her clothes in a search for a flea 

1935 ..... U.K ..... the driving test was FIRST introduced in Britain, on a voluntary basis to start with  ( see also March 16th) 

1938 ..... AUSTRIA ..... the FIRST live war broadcast was given by Ed Murrow when he delivered a vivid radio report from Vienna

1997 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST ever festival of New Irish Cinema was presented by the Kino Film Klub in Manchester, England. The nine-day festival previewed five new feature films and a wide selection of short films from the country’s talented film makers 

2000 ….. U.K ..... Mike Holden became Manchester's FIRST ever British heavyweight boxing champion when he beat Julius Francis in London. It was his 32nd birthday
