Selfridges Store opened for the FIRST time in London's Oxford Street in the West End with 1000 assistants ready to serve in a hundred departments in 42,000 sq ft of space and after an advertising campaign which cost £36,000 and images appearing in eighteen national newspapers. As business boomed the floor space was eventually doubled. The store had nine passenger lifts and in the first week over a million people flocked to the great temple of consumerism. It was named after its owner Harry Gordon Selfridge (1858-1947) and was Britain's FIRST purpose built store. In September 1997 they opened their FIRST store outside London when the Trafford Centre opened 1915 ….. U.S.A .....
