1774 ….. U.K ..... Mary Cooper published the FIRST book of English nursery rhymes. Called Tommy Thumb's Song Book it included Baa Baa Black Sheep, which was already 500 years old.  The black sheep's "three bags full" is thought to refer to a tax imposed on the wool trade in 1275 

1776 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST boat went from Liverpool via Runcorn and Bridgewater to Manchester 

1824 ..... U.K ..... Britain's FIRST National art collection was founded on this day when Parliament voted to spend £57,000 on 38 paintings left in the estate of a wealthy merchant John Angerstein. The collection was originally kept in house in Pall Mall but in 1838 was relocated to Trafalgar Square, London. Since then the National Gallery has been enlarged four times

1831 ….. U.K ..... a "Bazaar" opened in Deansgate, Manchester, the FIRST outside London 

1895 ….. FRANCE ..... the FIRST film presented publicly on a screen was La Sortie des Ouvriers de L'Usine Lumiere ( Departure of the Workers of the Lumiere Factory). It was shown before members of the Societe d'Encouragement pour L'Industrie Nationale by the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere at 44 rue de Rennes, Paris 

1904 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST colour photographs were shown in a newspaper, the Daily Illustrated Mirror 

1906 ….. U.K ..... England won the FIRST rugby international against France 35-8 

1907 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST taxicabs with meters began operating in London 

1919 ….. FRANCE ..... the FIRST international airline service was inaugurated on a weekly schedule between Paris and Brussels 

1978 ….. U.K ..... the film Saturday Night Fever FIRST opened in Britain 

2000 ….. U.K ..... D.C. Cook became the FIRST major dealership to sell imported vehicles on the Internet and car buyers were offered price reductions of up to 40%
