1675 ….. U.K ..... John Flamstead was appointed as Britain's FIRST Astronomer Royal 

1824 ….. U.K ..... the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was FIRST formed, with George 1V as its patron.  It eventually evolved into the RNLI. The charity was started by sir William Hillary, a soldier, seafarer and adventurer. He was inspired to begin the service when he saw a fishing fleet destroyed by a storm off the Isle of Man. In 1823 he began to get MPs and others interested in a life-saving operation. The FIRST lifeboat station was at Douglas in the Isle of Man

1876 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST ever picture of the England football team was taken just before they played Scotland in Glasgow

1909 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST electric fans went on sale at Selfridge's in London 

1914 ….. U.S.A ..... for the FIRST time a film was used as evidence in court. It was during the trial of Samuel London who was charged with producing a lewd and immoral picture i.e. The Inside of the White Slave Traffic. The proprietor of a cinema where it was shown, the Park Theatre, New York, was charged with giving an immoral exhibition. The complete film was shown as evidence in the court which had first to be granted a licence to show it by the Department of Water, Gas and Electricity 

1946 ….. U.K ..... Housewives Choice was transmitted for the FIRST time on BBC radio 

1950 ….. U.S.A ..... Walt Disney's Cinderella was shown for the FIRST time. The film took 6 years to make and of the 1000000 drawings produced by Disney artists only 125,000 were used. All the scenes  involving human characters were first filmed using real actors and the footage was used as the basis for the animation. Walt Disney chose a 17th century story from France from over 300 versions of the fairytale

1967….. U.K ..... North Sea Gas was FIRST piped ashore in Britain  ( near Durham) 

1972 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST individual to win more than £500,000 on the football pools was Kenneth Grimes who worked as an accountant at a home for the disabled in Hampshire. He spent 30p extra on a third perm which netted him £512,683.00.  The FIRST dividend paid out on football pools was £2.12s in 1923 

1994 ….. CHINA ..... Cheuk Mei-Hei , aged 29 years, became the FIRST woman to be executed in Singapore for a drug offence after she was convicted of smuggling heroin 

1995 ….. ISRAEL ..... for the FIRST time a woman took over as head of operations at Israel's Mossad Secret Service
