" known in Holland as Blowmaand (flower month) there are differing versions of how May came by its name and one which is not heard very much is that it came from the old Sanskrit word 'mah' which means ' to grow'. It is also said that the Roman festival of the goddess Maia, the wife of Vulcan, could also have given it its name. There were various old English names and the Anglo-Saxons called it Tri-Milch which referred to the improved conditions for the cattle and them being able to give milk three times a day. May 1st is celebrated as the beginning of summer in the Celtic calendar when the druids lit huge bonfires to honour the sun. The maypole and the morning dew also played their part "
