1897….. U.K ..... the Evening Chronicle was FIRST published by Edward Hulton, a Manchester man. It had 6 pages of 6 columns and cost 1/2d

 

1906 ….. RUSSIA ..... Russia’s FIRST elected Parliament, the DUMA, opened with a grand ceremony in St. Petersburg. Czar Nicholas 11 gave a speech on the necessity for freedom, order and justice but it was dissolved on July 10th 1906 and martial law was declared

 

1907….. U.S.A ..... Mothers Day was FIRST celebrated in Philadelphia

 

1919 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST scheduled commercial air service in Britain began. The flight from Manchester to Southport cost 4 gns one way and was run by A.V.Roe. The service ended on 30th September in the same year after 194 flights

 

1922 ….. U.K .....  Dr Ivy WiIIiams of Oxford became the FIRST Englishwoman to be called to the English Bar. She was also the FIRST woman to be awarded the DCL ( Doctor of Civil Law) (Oxford)

 

1940 ….. U.K .....  the FIRST show of the ENSA half hour entitled Drury Lane Calling starred Robert Montgomery who introduced Jessie Matthews and her husband Sonny Hale and Stanley Holloway, backed by Geraldo’s Orchestra

 

1943 ….. U.K ..... Rosamond Gilmour from Croydon, Surrey, became Britain’s FIRST air hostess on a BOAC shuttle-service flight from Whitchurch in Somerset to Shannon in the Irish Republic

 

1994 ….. U.K .....  Jenny Fray became the FIRST woman captain with British Airway in its 3,200 strong crew

 

1995 ….. the FIRST football special train went through the Chunnel, when Arsenal played Real Zaragoza in the European Cup Final. The latter team won

 

1996 ….. Pope John Paul made his FIRST ever visit to the Middle East
