1840 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST British Penny Black stamp went on sale. It was the world’s FIRST adhesive postage stamp and it became valid for postage on May 6th. The FIRST country to follow this example was Brazil who issued stamps on 1st August 1843

1778 ..... U.K ..... Queens College, Harley Street, London, opened under the Ref F D Maurice and the FIRST two students were Miss Sarah D Woodman and Miss King. By the end of the first term 200 students had enrolled

 

1909 ….. U.S.A ..... the FIRST regarded film critic, Frank Woods, began reviewing for the New York Dramatic Mirror

 

1911 ….. SWEDEN ..... the FIRST colour talkie VaIs ur Solstralen was premiered at the Stora Biografeatern in Malmo, Sweden

 

1937….. U.K ..... frozen food was FIRST introduced into Britain by S W Smedley. He had studied the American techniques and his cannery began selling frozen asparagus at 2s 3d per pack. This was followed by frozen strawberries in June. Although there were more than 2m home refrigerators in America in the late 1930s Britain only had around 3000. When war broke out production of frozen food was stopped and it was not introduced into Britain again until 1946

 

1953 ….. U.K ..... Gordon Richards became the FIRST jockey to be knighted and in the same year he rode his FIRST Derby winner, Pinza. In 34 seasons he was champion jockey 26 times and rode 4870 winners

 

1955 ….. ITALY ..... Stirling Moss and co-driver Dennis Jenkinson became the FIRST British winners of the Mille Miglia

 

1961 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST legal betting shop in the UK opened

 

1978 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST May Day holiday was celebrated in Britain ….. and  ….. the FIRST man to reach the North Pole alone was 37 years old Naomi Vemura from Japan who arrived at 4.45 GMT after having set out from Cape Columbia in Northern Canada two months earlier. On his arrival at the North Pole he informed the Smithsonian Institute by means of a special automatic bleeper which transmitted via a satellite

2003 ..... U.S.A ..... George W Bush became the FIRST serving American President to land in a navy jet on the deck of an aircraft carrier when he landed on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln for a televised address to the nation after the victory in Iraq
