1635 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST child to be baptized in the FIRST church in Salford, England (Trinity Church) was Sarah, the daughter of Humphrey Booth, son of the Founder. The ceremony was performed by the FIRST rector, the Rev. Richard Hollingworth

 

1844 ….. U.S.A ..... Samuel B Morse telegraphed the FIRST coded message. The historic message was “What hath God wrought”. The electric telegraph was immediately adopted for sending commercial and private messages and by the end of the Civil War the whole of America was linked by telegraphic lines

 

1862 ….. U.K ..... the inauguration of the world's FIRST underground railway - Paddington

 

1895 ….. U.K ..... John Henry Brodribb (Sir Henry Irving) was the FIRST actor to receive a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. He had refused the honour twelve years previously but decided to accept it this time as he felt that his profession needed "official recognition"

 

 1941 ….. U.K ..... Workers' Playtime FIRST began as a Saturdays only show but soon moved up to lunchtime three times a week.  Regular favourites were Gert and Daisy ( Elsie and Doris Waters) who starred also in the 5th Birthday Show in 1956 and the 21st Birthday Show in 1962. Each show came from a different factory canteen somewhere in England. The last show of all was from a corrugated casemakers at Hatfield Heath on 6th October 1964

 

1942 ….. U.K ..... Sunday games facilities were provided in Salford parks for the FIRST time. The children's playground facility also opened on Sunday

 

1976 .. U.S.A ..... Concorde's of British Airways and Air France arrived at Dulles  International Airport, Washington D.C having made their FIRST commercial crossing of the North  Atlantic

 

1993 ….. U.S.A ..... the FIRST all-woman panel judged a heavyweight boxing title fight for the Bowie-Ferguson bout in Washington

 

1997 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST ever- beer festival to be held in Glossop, England, was due to the combined efforts of Glossop Football Club and the Campaign for Real Ale

 

1999 ….. the U.K's  FIRST daily lottery, Prizeball 4, was launched by Littlewood's in Scotland
