1913 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Justice of the Peace in Britain was Miss Emily Duncan who was appointed at West Ham

 

1923 ….. FRANCE ..... the FIRST 24-hour Le Mans Grand Prix was won by the Frenchmen Lagaché and Leonard 

 

1936 ..... U.K ..... the liner Queen Mary sailed on her FIRST voyage from Southampton across the Atlantic to New York. She was built by the Cunard Line and throughout the latter half of the 1930s was Britain's maritime pride and joy. In August 1936 she made the very FIRST Atlantic crossing in under 4 days

 

1940 ….. U.K ..... Hi Gang, a hugely popular wartime series starring Vic Oliver, Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyons, began on this day and eventually became the FIRST radio show to run for 52 weeks non-stop. The show was built into a very successful film by Gainsborough

 

1953 ..... "The Father of Country Music Festival" by Jimmie Rodgers, an annual music event which was FIRST held on this day

 

1999 ….. U.K ..... Manchester United completed the treble to become the FIRST team from one of Europe's 5 major leagues to do so - Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup

 

2008 ….. SPACE ..... for the FIRST time a spacecraft successfully landed at one of the polar regions on Mars and crystal clear images of the surface were captured
