1938 ….. the Radio Gang Show FIRST began on Radio Luxembourg and was sponsored by Lifebuoy soap. Ralph Reader was producer of the show and called himself  ' A Holborn Rover' when he started the Boy Scouts Gang Show in the mid-Thirties. His greatest hit was We're Riding Along On The Crest Of A Wave and it became his signature tune for life.  The cast included Nan Kennedy, Veronica Brady, Eric Christmas, Dick Francis and supporting Scouts 

 

1943 ….. U.S.A ..... Yankee Doodle Doo was a transatlantic super-show contrived to harmonize with England's new allies, the Yanks, and FIRST began on this day. It was scripted by top American comedy man Hal Block and regular features included Salute With Music and Brothers in Arms.  It starred Lesley Mitchell , Slim Allen, Vic Oliver  and Billy Ternent and the BBC Dance Orchestra plus the week's guest stars

 

1953 ….. Mount Everest was conquered for the FIRST time when Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing planted the Union Jack and the flags of India and Nepal on the summit. The news reached London on the morning of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11on June 2nd

 

1962 ….. U.K ..... the National Commercial Bank of Scotland offered the FIRST Boat bank

1999 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST ever exhibition devoted to Buffalo Bill, the US soldier and hero, opened at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. His real name was William F Cody and he was born in Scott County, Iowa in 1846. He began his famous wild west shows in the mid-1880s after a life of adventure as a frontiersman, hunter, scout and cavalry man. In 1887 he brought his show to England. He died on January 10th 1917 and was buried in Denver ..... and ..... Cathy O'Dowd, a South African mountaineer, became the FIRST woman to climb Mount Everest from both sides.

 

2004 ..... Helen Collins and Ian McNabb became the FIRST couple to get married on Concorde after Manchester Airport was given a licence to conduct weddings on the grounded supersonic jet
