1780 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Derby was run at Epsom Downs. The winner was a chestnut colt called 'Diomed' and the prize was 1075 guineas. The idea of the race was first discussed in 1778 at a house party given by the 12th Earl of Derby and a toss of a coin settled the name. The other founder was Sir Charles Bunbury, so instead of the Bunbury Stakes we have The Derby
1878 ..... U.K ..... London University was empowered to grant degrees to women by a supplementary charter and the FIRST three were Elizabeth M Creek , Marianne Andrews and Elizabeth Hills who all graduated on 17th November 1880
