1760 ….. U.K ..... the 4th Earl Ferrers was the last English nobleman to be executed by hanging and the FIRST by the new drop which had just been introduced in the place of the barbarous cart, ladder and medieval three-cornered gibbet. He was executed for murdering his valet

 

1821 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST edition of the Manchester Guardian appeared

 

1865 …..  U.S.A ..... the world’s FIRST train robbery took place at North Bend, Ohio, USA

 

1896 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST commercial showing of a film outside London was at Cardiff Town Hall

 

1913 ….. U.K ..... King George V and Queen Mary became the FIRST British monarchs to attend a public cinema performance - Quo Vadis at the Albert Hall, London

 

1961 ….. SPACE .....  Naval Commander Alan Shephard became the FIRST American to take part in a manned space flight. In 1959 after being chosen to participate in the NASA astronaut  training programme he was eventually chosen as one of the FIRST seven astronauts and in particular as the FIRST American to go into space. The spacecraft Freedom V11 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida and splashed down 15 minutes later in the Atlantic Ocean after reaching an altitude of 189 km. Nine years later he was appointed Commander of the Apollo 14 voyage to the moon

 

1964 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST meeting of a “Clean Up TV” campaign led by Mrs Norah Buckland and her friend Mary Whitehouse. The organization was later given the name of The National Viewers’ and Listeners’ Association

 

1967 ..... SPACE ..... the FIRST all British satellite, Ariel 3, was launched in California

 

1988 ….. the FIRST live television broadcast from the summit of Everest

 

1996 ….. U.K ..... Granada TV linked up with Classic FM radio for the FIRST time as viewers and listeners across Britain saw the moment that the world-famous Halle Orchestra combined with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for a unique collaboration to celebrate Granada’s 40th birthday

 

2000 ….. U.K ..... Ken Livingstone became the FIRST democratically elected Mayor of London

 

2005 ….. U.K ..... Julie Etchingham became the FIRST woman to anchor a national election night show in the UK
