1939 ..... U.S.A ..... Dorothy Garrod became the FIRST woman to be appointed by Cambridge University when given a professor-ship in the Disney Chair of Archaeology
1954 ….. U.K ..... Roger Gilbert Bannister became the FIRST man to run the mile in less than 4 minutes ( 3 mins 59.4 secs). He was born in Harrow in 1929 and became a middle distance athlete. Whilst at Oxford University he studied medicine. He won the annual mile race in the years 1947 to 1950 and in 1952 was the finalist in the 1500m race in the Olympic Games at Helsinki. In 1955 he retired from athletics and became interested in the medical effects of athletics and the effect on health of other exercises. He also published his book ‘Four Minute Mile’ in the same year. Apart from breaking the world record he also broke the psychological barrier ….. and ….. You’re Only Young Once was the FIRST radio comedy series to star Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, following star spots on various Northern variety bills. They ran the M & W Detective Agency to which each week’s guest star brought a case to solve. This FIRST show featured the Canadian star Robert Beatty
1965 ..... U.K ..... the RAF's acrobatic team, the Red Arrows, were FIRST seen in action at RAF Little Rissington, Gloucestershire. The display was a media exercise to introduce the RAF Aerobatic Team and was not open to the public. Their FIRST public display was on May 9th at the French national air day in Clermont Ferrand
1972 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Ladies Race under Jockey Club rules was the Goya Stakes held over 1 mile 1 furlong at Kempton Park. The winner was 23 year old Meriel Tufnell riding Scorched Earth
