1900 ….. U.K ..... the SS Ivernia 1 docked at Liverpool and on board were the FIRST Japanese theatre troupe ever to travel to the West. The leader of the troupe was called Otojiro Kawakami and with his wife Sadayakko travelled first class, whilst the rest travelled in steerage. The actors were all men as for 250 years women had been banned from performing on the public stage in Japan
