..... French woman who was the FIRST woman film director in the world and possibly the FIRST director ever of a fiction film when she made La Fée Aux Choux in 1896 ( The Cabbage Fairy). In 1895 she was working as Leon Gaumont's secretary in Paris when the first Lumiére cameras were exhibited and was fascinated by the new technology. She has been credited with the direction of more than 400 hundred one-reelers in France between 1896 and 1907 and more than 300 hundred one-reelers in the USA between 1910 and later 1913.  There are also numerous feature films

In 1919 she became the FIRST woman Professor of Industrial Medicine at Harvard Medical School provided that she did not use the Harvard Club ( which was strictly men only)

* Alice Blanche Leigh

  born 1855

 ..... FIRST woman champion of the sport of archery. It was the first sport to be taken up with any real success by women and she held an amazing record of 23 British championships spanning 41 years from 1881 to 1922. She was 67 years old when she won her last championship. Between 1882 and 1885 her own mother won the championships from her. World War 1 prevented the events being held between 1915 and 1918

 

Alice Marangopoulos

 ….. born in Corfu, where she completed high school. After receiving her degree from the Law School of the University of Athens with honours, Alice Marangopoulos undertook postgraduate studies in Penal Law and Criminology at the Universities of Rome (1952-1954) and Geneva. She was awarded her doctor’s degree (LID) with the highest distinction by the University of Geneva (1973) . As advocate in Athens, she was elected in 1967 to the Board and in 1974-76 as vice president of the Athens Bar Association. In 1976 she was elected and appointed full professor of Criminology the Panteios University of Athens, of which she was elected Rector (President and Chancellor) during 1979-1980 and 1983-84 (FIRST woman President of a University). In 1973 she established, in the same University, a postgraduate seminar in Criminology in which she also taught. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Criminology and President of the Greek Society of Criminology. She is Vice-President of the Greek National Centre of Social Research and the FIRST woman member of the Governing Board of the Bank of Greece

..... FIRST woman to motor across the United States from coast to coast when she set off from Hell's Gate in New York in 1909 with two sisters-in-law and a female friend. Fifty nine days later they ended up in San Francisco. The drive was to promote the company that made the smart green Maxwell 30 motorcar they were in and Alice drove all the way

 

* Alice Stebbins Wells

..... American who was the FIRST policewoman in the Los Angeles Police Department in 1910. On her first day of service she was given a Gamewell Key, a book of rules, a first aid book and a policeman's badge which entitled the holder to free passes on buses when travelling to and from work. On using this badge she was often accused of misusing her husband's badge and when she drew this to the attention of her superiors she was subsequently issued with Policewoman's Badge No.1. She was allowed to design her own uniform and was active in propagating the need for policewomen elsewhere. As a result of her efforts seventeen departments in American were employing policewomen by 1916

 

* Alice Woods

..... one of the world's FIRST female football stars who played with the Dick, Kerr's Ladies from Preston. The team was formed during the First World War and took their name from the Dick, Kerr tram factory. Eventually they toured France and America where they took on the men and sometimes beat them.  Their club colours were black and white jerseys and blue shorts and their England colours were white jerseys and blue shorts. They were the undefeated British champions from 1920 to 1921 and were also the holders of seven silver Cups and two sets of Gold medals
