* Annie Jump Cannon

  born 11th December 1863 died 13th April 1941

..... American astronomer who was the FIRST woman  to be awarded an honorary doctorate by Oxford University. She was almost completely deaf and had to use a hearing aid but she had great powers of concentration. She was an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society and one of the few women ever elected to the American Philosophical Society. In 1931 the National Academy of Sciences awarded her the Henry Draper Gold Medal and in 1932 she received the Ellen Richards Research Prize which was used to establish the Annie Jump Cannon Prize for women astronomers. She proved that the vast majority of stars represent only a few species and developed the definitive Harvard system of spectral classification

 ..... one of the FIRST women to be put into prison in the suffrage campaign. The other was Christabel Pankhurst.  Annie was also the FIRST woman in the Textile Unions to be elected to the District Committee

….. an English lady who was one of the FIRST people to be awarded the MBE when she was given the award for her services to the Admiralty in London in 1918. The award had only been introduced the previous year. In 1994 she reached her 100th birthday which she celebrated at the Parkside Hotel residential home for the elderly in Penarth, South Wales, where she lived

* Annie Smith Peck

  born 19th October 1850 died 1935

 ..... American who was the FIRST woman to be admitted to the American School of Classical Studies. She made the FIRST ascent of Mt Sorata in Bolivia and in 1895 she achieved celebrity by climbing the Matterhorn in knickerbockers, a tunic and a felt hat tied with a veil. She was one of the founders of the American Alpine Club. On September 2nd 1908 she became the FIRST person to climb the highest peak in the Peruvian Andes - Mt Huascaran. In 1911 at the age of 61, she climbed Mt Coropuna in Peru and planted a 'Votes for Women' at the summit. Her last climb was Mt Madison in New Hampshire when she was 82. In 1927 the Lima Geographical Society named Huascarans North Peak "Cumbre Ana Peck" in her honour. when made a professor of Latin at Purdue University she became one of the FIRST women in the U.S to attain the rank
