She was also the FIRST Australian woman to become a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1971 she was appointed CBE and made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1993 and received numerous medals

Nobel prize-winning chemist who was appointed the FIRST Wolfson Research Professor of the Royal Society and in 1965 became the FIRST woman since Florence Nightingale to be appointed to the Order of Merit. She correctly analysed cholesterol iodide, the FIRST complex organic molecule to be determined completely by X-ray analysis and her use of an electronic computer to organise data marked the FIRST time that one had been so used. In 1964 she won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for analyzing the structure of Vitamin B12. She was also the FIRST female Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science

..... the FIRST probationer at the new Dovercourt Cottage Hospital and one of the FIRST women to be awarded the George Cross which was made for her heroism in preventing a disaster at London's Middlesex Hospital in 1934 whilst working as a theatre sister and she prevented more serious damage after an oxygen cylinder had caught fire and threatened to explode.  She was decorated with the Empire Gallantry Medal and in 1942 was invested with the George Cross in exchange for the EGM, although she wanted to keep her original award. Another female recipient of this award was Daphne Pearson who given the award on July 19th 1940 during the Second World War. Again hers was exchanged for the George Cross
