* Julia Margaret Cameron

born 1815 died 1879

..... among the FIRST women to take a photograph seriously. In 1863 she was given a large box camera by her daughter and threw herself into photography with enthusiasm, turning a hen-house into a studio and a coalhouse as a darkroom. After many hours of work on January 29th 1864, 25 years after photography had been unveiled to the public in France, she produced her first success. For the next eleven years hardly a day passed when she did not take a photograph and she photographed many great Victorian personalities. In 1974 an album of some 95 of her favourite photographs was auctioned at Sotheby's and sold to an American for a world record price for photographs of £52,000.  When an appeal was held in Britain to purchase this album and retain it for British people to enjoy the money was raised within a few weeks

..... FIRST woman Secretary General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation from 1971 to 1978. The IPPF is the world's largest voluntary family planning organisation and worked to give couples world wide access to family planning services and information. In 1991 she was awarded the United Nations Population Award because of her long involvement and leadership in world population issues and her role in the global promotion of family planning

 

* Julia Ward Howe

born May 27th 1819 died 1910

..... FIRST woman to he elected to the American Academy of Arts and Leisure in 1908. Philanthropist, poetess and leader of the American Suffrage movement, she edited the Boston ' Commonwealth' an antislavery paper. She was also the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic which she wrote to the tune of "John Brown' s Body . In 1861, she was standing on a hillside in Washington watching a regiment of young soldiers marching off to fight for their country. The band was playing John Brown's Body and so stirred was she by the courage in their faces that she began to write the words as soon as she arrived home, words that were destined to become the great marching hymn of her country, "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord" . When asked whether it was hard to grow old she said "I don't find it so. The deeper I drink the cup, the sweeter it tastes, all the sugars at the bottom"

 

* Julia Clifford Lathrop

born 1858 died 1932

..... American who helped to establish the FIRST U.S juvenile court in 1899. She was the FIRST woman member of the Illinois State Board of Charities and from 1912-21 was FIRST head of the Federal Children's Bureau

..... Englishwoman who was the FIRST woman to pass the rugby referees' exams in the state of New South Wales, Australia

 

* Julia Morgan

born 1872 died 1957

..... American who was the FIRST woman student admitted to the College of Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1894. In 1901 she became the FIRST woman to graduate from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and a year later became the FIRST licensed woman architect in California. In 1904 she opened her own office in San Francisco. Her most famous building was Hearst's Castle in San Simeon built for the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. In a career which spanned over 50 years she designed over a thousand others

* Julia Snell

..... FIRST British skier to win a gold medal in an individual event - skiing- 1992- World Cup meeting at Madarao in Japan. The only previous British winner of World Cup gold is UV Ski team-mate Jilly Curry, who notched up three first places when scores are added together for the combined event. Julia scored a personal best of 24.75 points
