American who was the FIRST woman graduate in dentistry although others had practised unofficially She was refused permission to study many times because of her sex but on February 21st 1866 she graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, Cinncinatti with a DDS degree. She was already a practising dentist at this time as there was no legal requirement to hold a licence. Due to her previous experience she was only required to attend the Ohio college for one semester

..... in 1847 she was the FIRST woman in Massachusetts to graduate from Oberlin College, which was then the only college open to women and black people. She was also the FIRST woman in the US to keep her own name after marriage and inspired what is now a commonplace practice for women in public life. With her husband Henry Blackwell, brother of Elizabeth Blackwell, they worked for female suffrage through State legislation and founded the weekly, Woman's Journal, in 1872. Her daughter, Alice Stone Blackwell, was the only original member of the National American Woman Suffrage Society to see the arrival of the vote for American women in 1919

 

* Lucy Sutherland

..... FIRST British dressmaker to succeed in France when she turned to dressmaking to support herself and her children. She called her company Maison Lucile and after marrying again moved to Hanover Square and did a roaring trade in beautiful and delicate underclothes. At this time in Paris although dressmakers  showed off their creations on real models they were forbidden to move. Lucy decided to do something different and got six attractive girls and made a stage for them to parade on, today's 'catwalk'. Then she sent out invitations to people like Princess Alice and Margot Asquith for a fashion parade

..... Australian historian and administrator who was the FIRST woman to act as Pro-Vice Chancellor of Oxford University between 1961 and 1969 and the FIRST woman to speak at the Oxford Union

 

* Lucy Walker

born 1836 died 1916

..... in 1864 she was the FIRST woman to scale the Balmhorn and on 22nd August 1871 became the FIRST woman to reach the summit of the 14,693 ft Matterhorn. She also made the FIRST female ascent of the Weisshorn and Lyskamm and over time established herself as the dominant female climber of the time.  She climbed in a white print dress and took cake and champagne with her. She was one of the FIRST members of the Ladies Alpine club, founded in 1907, and in 1912 at the age of 76 she became its second president
