She was leader of the FIRST 8 women pilots selected to ' ferry' the light type of trainer aircraft from factory to aerodrome. The others were - Mrs Winifred Crossley, Miss N Cunnison, the Hon Mrs Margaret Fairweather, Miss Mona Friedlander, Miss Joan Hughes , Gabrielle Patterson, Miss Rosemary and Mrs Marion Wilberforce. They belonged to the women's section of the Air Transport Auxiliary and each one had many years flying experience with most of them having a record of more than 1,000 flying hours. Altogether during the war there were 146 women pilots working within the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA). She was also Britain's FIRST female commercial pilot and the world's third. With Dorothy Spicer she was co-director of the world's FIRST all-female airborne business venture - Air Trips. On May 18th 1943 when a new board was announced by BOAC after the old board had resigned en masse in a power struggle with the newly formed RAF Transport Commission she was appointed
