She founded two orchestras, wrote five symphonies, six concertos, two large-scale works for horn and many other works. In 1967 she was appointed chairman of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain, only the second woman to hold the post ( see Elizabeth Maconchy). In 1988 she conducted a programme which represented 300 years of music by women composers
