1775 ..... U.S.A ..... the US Marines FIRST came into existence 

1885 ..... GERMANY ..... Paul Daimler, son of the German engineer Gottlieb Daimler, became the FIRST motor-cyclist when he rode his father’s new invention on a round trip of 6 miles 

1923 ..... U.K ..... the BBC ‘house dance orchestra’ made its FIRST broadcast. It played more formal music for dancing than the foxtrots of the 2LO dance bands 

1951 ..... U.K ..... the BBC televised a rugby league game for the FIRST time - England v New Zealand at Swinton near Manchester

1952 ..... U.S.A ..... America exploded the world’s FIRST hydrogen bomb at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific 

1995 ..... CHINA ..... John Scripps became the FIRST Briton ever sentenced to be hanged for murder in the former colony of Singapore after he had been found guilty of the murder of South African Gerard Lowe, a mother and her son. He was also suspected of killing others 

1997 ….. U.K ..... Britain's FIRST National Curry Day, in which hundreds of Indian restaurants took part. All those participating gave 10% of their takings to Save The Children which supported projects helping children in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh
