1896 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST London to Brighton Car Rally was won and it became a regular and official event from 1927. It marked the raising of the speed limit from 4 mph (2 mph in towns) to 14 mph for horseless carriages 

1910 ….. U.S.A ..... the FIRST naval vessel equipped with a (temporary) flight deck was the U.S light cruiser Birmingham and pilot Eugene Ely took off at 3.16 p.m on this day

1922 ..... U.K ..... the BBC began its FIRST daily broadcasting service at 6 o’clock when the FIRST regular news broadcast was made from a room in Marconi House in The Strand. The material was supplied by Reuters News Agency and was read by Arthur Burrows. A daily diet of concerts, talks and news was planned  

1932 ..... U.K ..... book tokens went on sale for the FIRST time 

1952 ..... U.K. singles record charts were FIRST published in Britain by New Musical Express. The charts were based on gramophone dealers' returns of sales and the main ones were EMI, Decca, Philips and Pye.  Al Martino’s Here In My Heart was the FIRST No.1 

1976 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Concorde landed at Ringway Airport, Manchester having been diverted from Heathrow due to bad weather 

1994 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST ever erotic novel published in Welsh went on sale ..... and ...... the FIRST fare-paying train service to Paris through the Channel Tunnel left London at 8.23 am (30 seconds early). Around 800 passengers with commemorative certificates and glasses of champagne boarded the £24m train. They alighted at the Gare du Nord in Paris approximately 3 hours later ..... and ..... fireworks and celebrity parties launched ticket sales for the FIRST National Lottery in Britain for 170 years.  It was predicted that £20m worth of tickets would be sold in time for the FIRST draw which took place on Saturday, 19th November and which was shown live on BBC television 

1996 ..... U.K .....  Vivien Leigh became the FIRST film star to be honoured with an English Heritage Blue Plaque which was unveiled outside her London Flat in Eaton Square
