1837 ….. U.K ..... The Pickwick Papers, the FIRST novel by Charles Dickens, was FIRST published in book form having been originally serialised in monthly numbers from April 1836 to November 1837. Dickens was 25 years old at the time 

1869 ..... EGYPT ..... the Suez Canal was FIRST opened to traffic and three days later on November 20th, 68 vessels arrived safely in Suez 

1880 ..... U.K ..... Elizabeth M Creak, Marianne Andrews and Elizabeth Hills were the FIRST three women to graduate as Bachelors of Arts from London University after it was empowered to grant degrees to women in 1878 

1904 ..... the FIRST underwater journey of a submarine was across the Solent to the Isle of Wight 

1913 ..... the FIRST ship went through the Panama Canal 

1955 ..... U.K ..... Anglesey in Wales became the FIRST authority to introduce fluoride into its water supply in Britain 

1959 ..... U.K ..... two Scottish airports, Prestwick and Renfrew, became the FIRST to offer duty free goods in Britain 

1962 ..... U.S.A ..... Dulles Airport in Chicago, the FIRST airport designed for jets, was opened 

1970  ..... U.K ..... Stephanie Rahn was the FIRST Page 3 girl in The Sun newspaper. However she was not the first to appear topless, as a year earlier, in the second issue of the Murdoch paper, a model called Uschi Obermeier had appeared in the centre spread. Full nudity appeared first in a broadsheet newspaper, when in March 1971, in The Times,  a model called Vivien Neves squatted naked on a sheepskin rug and raised both arms above her head whilst brushing at her hair.  It formed part of an advertisement for Fisons fertiliser
