1667 ..... U.K ..... medical history was made when the FIRST blood transfusion in Britain took place. Members of the Royal Society persuaded Arthur Coga to have 12oz of sheep’s blood pumped into his system for a fee of £1 

1852 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST pillar box in the British Isles was erected in St. Helier, on Jersey . This was to save the expense of maintaining a letter receiving office and the Post Office also began to urge householders to provide slits in their street doors through which mail could be dropped so that the letter carrier did not waste time in waiting for a reply to his knock 

1870 ..... U.K ..... John McIntosh, aged 19, was the FIRST aid worker with the British Red Cross to die on active service 

1889 ..... U.S.A ..... the world’s FIRST jukebox was installed at the Palais Royal Saloon in San Francisco. It comprised of an Edison phonograph with 4 listening tubes 

1896 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Royal Command Performance before the British Sovereign. The event was in the Red Drawing Room at Windsor Castle before H.M.Queen Victoria 

1921 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Royal Variety Performance was held. This annual event was previously known as the Royal Command Performance 

1937 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST air mail service to and from Shetland (Scotland) was inaugurated. The journey time was 2 hours 40 minutes

1938 ….. U.S.A ..... the song This Can't Be Love was FIRST heard when The Boys From Syracuse opened at the Alvin Theatre in New York and dashing Eddie Albert and beautiful Marcy Westcott enchanted the entire house with the song.  The score was from Richard Rodgers and lyricist was Lorenz Hart 

1963 ..... U.K ..... Dr Who was broadcast on television for the FIRST time 

1990 ….. ANTARCTICA ..... the FIRST all-woman expedition to the South Pole left Antarctica on the first leg of a 70-day, 800 mile ski trek. The team consisted of three Americans, one Japanese and 12 Russians
