1095 ….. FRANCE ..... Pope Urban 11 preached the FIRST crusade on a hillside at Clermont in Central France. He told his audience of churchmen, knights and commoners that the Turks, ' despicable, degenerate and enslaved by demons', had overrun the Holy Land and were massacring eastern Christians. He called for all those ' resplendent in the name of Christ' to " hasten to exterminate this vile race from our lands" and to liberate Jerusalem. This mission was divine. He said " I, not I, but God exhorts you"
