In 1963 the Samaritans registered as a charity and were organised on a national basis with around 40 branches in England and Wales. The founder of the Samaritans was the Reverend Chad Varah who took this first call when he set up an emergency line after becoming rector of St Stephen Walbrook in London. The movement now has 202 branches in the U.K and Ireland with 15,500 volunteers and an international arm, Befrienders Worldwide which works in more than 40 countries
