1872  ..... U.K ..... the FIRST international football match was played with Scotland (on St. Andrew’s Day) against England in Glasgow. No goals were scored 

1901 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST hearing aids offered hope to deaf people. Known as the Akouphone, it was designed by Miller Reese Hutchinson, an electrical engineer 

1919 ..... women in France voted in a general election for the FIRST time 

1955 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST floodlit football match at Wembley was played between England and Spain ..... and ..... the FIRST issue of Motor Cycle News was published by Cyril Quantrill and Peter Baldwin. Initially all went well but the paper ran into financial problems and Peter Baldwin's father ( who owned the printing business) pulled the plug. Quantrill managed to sell the title to Emap but stayed on as editor until 1961 by which time the circulation was up to 67,000

1958 ….. U.K ..... Michael Bond published the FIRST book in the Paddington Bear series. It was called A Bear Called Paddington. In 1998 at the annual teddy bear sale at Christie's more than 100 illustrations by Harry Hargreaves were expected to fetch around £7000 

1995 ..... U.K ..... Queen Elizabeth 11 attended a full service in a Roman Catholic church for the FIRST time 

1996 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Freddie Mercury (of Queen) Award  which recognised music and artistic intelligence in the sub-continent where he lived until he was 17 years old, was won by Alisha Chinai of Bombay, India
