1968 ..... U.S.A ..... Shirley Chisholm became the FIRST black woman to be elected to the House of Representatives in the U.S. In 1972 and 1976 she was on the Democratic National Committee and in 1972 ran for the Democratic nomination for President. She was an outspoken campaigner on the rights of women, racial minorities and improvements in employment and education and is also a member of the League of Women Voters and the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP)
