1916 ..... U.S.A ..... Jeannette Rankin of Montana, USA, became the FIRST woman Member of Congress 

1922 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Royal broadcast was by the Prince of Wales on Station 2L0. Eleven days later its name changed to the British Broadcasting Company ..... and ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST woman Senator in the USA , Rebecca Latimer Felton of Georgia, was sworn in in Washington. The appointment was on the death of her husband rather than by election 

1927 ..... U.K ..... Mercedes Gleitze was the FIRST Englishwoman to swim the English Channel - France to England - 15 hrs 15 mins 

1932 ..... U.K ..... the London Philharmonic Orchestra gave its FIRST concert. Sir Thomas Beecham conducted 

1933 ….. U.S.A ..... Boston got the FIRST look at the British made masterpiece The Private Life of Henry V111, five days before it opened in New York and seventeen days before it was shown in London.  It was the FIRST British film to compete for a best picture prize and the FIRST to win a major Oscar when Charles Laughton was named Best Actor 

1938 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST BBC attempt to start a soap opera was "Everyday Happenings in an Everyday Household" which starred Mabel Constanduros, Ralph Truman and Megs Jenkins. Chapter One, Breakfast on Saturday Morning was broadcast on this day. The serial was later made into a novel A Nice Fire in the Drawing Room (1939)  and the serial returned in April 1940 for a wartime run 

1946 ..... U.K .....Woman’s Hour was heard for the FIRST time on radio and was first introduced by a man. The first programmes included an interview with a budding young actress, Deborah Kerr. Since that first programme, it has, almost without exception, been introduced by a woman. Its FIRST regular presenter was Joan Griffiths who presented a daily programme of music, advice and entertainment for the home and other presenters have been Judith Chalmers, Jean Metcalfe and Marjorie Anderson ..... and ..... the BBC's FIRST daily serial, Dick Barton, Special Agent, was FIRST broadcast with Noel Johnson as Dick Barton and John Mann as Snowey White  

1986 ..... U.K ..... The Independent Newspaper was FIRST published 

1988 ..... U.K ..... Bebb Burchell was the FIRST black chief education officer in Britain when appointed by the London Borough of Lambeth
