Salford

 My Home Town

My Poem

It's a dirty old town I hear people shout

But Salford has history, of that there's no doubt

This town of our forbears which once was so clean

Had meadows and orchards and trees ever green

The Romans and Saxons who helped build our town

Left us a legacy which not many see

While bondsmen and slaves were abroad in the land

The men of Salford had the right to be free

To the south of the town stands Ordsall Hall

Where a King and Queen once prepared for a ball

And Princes and Earls and Knights of the realm

Prepared for battle ' neath stately elms

And an avenue of sycamores towering on high

Led in armies of men, prepared to die

To the Salford spa once people did go

To drink of the water which purely did flow

The industrial revolution brought blackness and grime

Where once ran clear water it brought only slime

The city planners took the heart from our town

The streets of our childhood were mercilessly torn down

Where neighbours were neighbours and your house was your home

You could walk without fear and could walk alone

But wherever we go, wherever we roam

We always come back to Salford, our home

The town of our forbears which once was so clean

Holds a place in our hearts that can always be seen
