* Brenda Dean

born April 29th 1943

..... born in Salford, she left high school at the age of sixteen and became a typist at a local printing firm. In 1959 she became Administrative Secretary of the Manchester branch of Sogat, a position she held until 1971 when she was elected Assistant Branch Secretary. In 1976 she was elected Branch Secretary and in August 1983 was elected General President of Sogat and General Secretary in 1985, the FIRST woman to lead a major craft or industrial trade union. In July 1986 she was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree by Salford University. she was also a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and helped to train disabled people to drive cars especially adapted for use by the disabled
