..... stage actress who was born in Hayfield Road, Pendleton and graduated in 1958 with a diploma from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She has appeared in several television series but is probably well remembered for her role in Coronation Street as the daughter of May Hardman and married the character of Colin Appleby. She was one of the first members of the cast and before joining Coronation Street had worked at Granada on the drama series Skyport, a programme in which many other Street actors also appeared.
..... FIRST woman to be appointed principal of Eccles Sixth Form College, England and also the First married woman to be headmistress at Manchester High School for Girls since the school was founded in 1874
..... in 2004 she was named Salford's Young Volunteer in Sport when her efforts at entering the first Salford Victoria Ladies FC team into the women's five-a-side Powerleague were recognised. She set up the team after deciding she'd had enough of sitting on the sidelines watching the men play and today is head of Salford Victoria Ladies football team. She has been assistant treasurer for the club for four years now and as a Millenium Volunteer took part in many community minded exercises. When she began organising the football club she arranged for a coach to come along and teach the girls basic football skills and after advertising for players she eventually had a squad of eighteen local ladies who trained every week and soon became a good team with Claire as Captain. Their ages range from 13 to 40 years. The early days were difficult with many of the local yobs making things impossible with stealing equipment etc but after she had contacted New Deals for Communities in the Kersal area and secured a sizeable grant the team found a safe, suitable environment to train in. The grant enabled the team to get new training equipment, new footballs and for a few of the ladies to get their FA Coaching Badges. Claire continued to fund raise and before long had raised enough money to get a full kit and a free Club t-shirt for every lady. The team played their first match in January 2004 and the future looks bright for them thanks to all the hard work put in by this young lady
