..... U.K ..... the FIRST conviction in Britain using finger-prints as evidence was in the case against Harry Jackson by the Metropolitan Police at the Old Bailey. He had left his thumbprint in wet paint on a window sill and was tracked down through it. He was found guilty and sentenced to seven years. In 1905 a thumbprint left on a cash box by one of two brothers (the Strattons) was enough to have them both executed for the murder of two elderly shopkeepers1933 ..... NEW ZEALAND ..... ..... SPACE ..... Luna 2, one of the Russian probes, was the FIRST ever to hit the moon. The following month it sent back the FIRST photographs of the far side of the moon. Other notable probes in the series have been - Luna 9 which was the FIRST to soft land on the moon (3rd February 1966), Luna 16 returned with a soil sample (Sept.1970) and Luna 17 landed the FIRST automatic moon rover, Lunokhod, (Nov.1970) which was driven by remote control from Earth. The first one was driven a total of 6½ miles in its 10 month working lifetime. A second one, which landed on January 15th 1973, covered 23 miles
