1827 ….. U.K ..... the FIRST Heaton Park race meeting was held in Manchester  when commoners rubbed shoulders with aristocracy as they teemed out of the Manchester slums in their thousands. The following year the Earl of Wilton restricted entrance to carriages but the commoners turned up in force again, riding in every sort of gig that could be found
