1513 ..... Vasco Nunez de Balboa ( 1475-1517), Spanish conquistador, became the FIRST European to see the Pacific Ocean

1650  ..... U.K ..... the world’s FIRST marriage bureau was opened in London 

1829  ..... Britain’s FIRST Metropolitan Police Force was mobilised by the Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel. They wore top hats to protect themselves and to stand on if they needed to look over high walls and carried footballs raffles to summon help if needed 

1963 ….. U.K ..... the Ken Dodd Show was heard for the FIRST time. His signature tune was Love is Like a Violin and the shows faded out to the tune of Happiness and Ken Dodd shouting "Tattie-bye".  There was a second series in 1964 and a third in 1965 and by 1967 we had Doddy's Oddities and the Knotty Ash Operatic Society. The series closed in 1975 ..... and ..... the Rolling Stones opened their FIRST British tour at London's New Victoria Theatre sharing the bill with Bo Diddley and the Everly Brothers

1979  ..... Pope John Paul 11 arrived in Ireland for the FIRST ever Papal visit 

1983 ….. U.K ..... Lady Dorothy Mary Donaldson was elected the FIRST woman Lord Mayor of London

2002 ..... U.K .....  Emma Richards became the FIRST woman to complete a single-handed west-to-east transatlantic crossing in a monohull vessel when she arrived in Torbay Devon after a journey on the first stage of a round-the-world race which began in New York on September 15th. She was the only woman in a field of 13 taking part in the Around Alone race which circumnavigates the globe on a 29,000 mile route

2005 ..... U.K ..... fire crews in Salford became the FIRST in the country to teach the public how to save victims of heart attacks and cardiac arrest when local people were invited to Broughton fire station for a two hour lesson in resuscitation.
