1838 ..... Henriette d'Angeville became the FIRST woman to climb to the top of Mont Blanc in France

1882 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST electric power station came into action at 3 p.m. It was the Edison Electric Illuminating Company’s plant at Pearl Street, New York and it had a grand total of 85 customers ( see also July 16th

1885 ..... U.S.A ..... the world’s FIRST cafeteria opened in New York City 

1909 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Boy Scout Rally was held at the Crystal Palace in London and 11,000 boys marched past their founder, General Sir Robert Baden-Powell. The Scout Movement enriched the lives of millions of boys and the Chief Scout, as Baden-Powell was known, was a popular figure and was admired by scouts all over the world 

1912 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST ever accident occurred on London’s underground when 22 people were injured in a tube collision on the Piccadilly line 

1940 ….. U.K ..... Wilfred Pickles was compere of King Pins of Comedy, a weekly series of interviews with popular comedy stars which was FIRST heard on this day. The FIRST King Pin was Harry Korris of Arcadian Follies stage fame. He later became the star of Happidrome, his own radio show.  On programme number 100 the guest was George Robey, who was known as 'The Prime Minister of Mirth' 

1955 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST newscaster was seen on television when Kenneth Kendall appeared on BBC TV reading the late news summary. Until then the news had been read by disembodied voices over stills, maps and diagrams. He was a former Coldstream Guards officer and soon attracted a following of adoring female fans
