Mobbs - Edgar..... FIRST Northampton rugby player to captain England.  He was held in such high esteem that he had a memorial raised in his memory after his death in the First World War. To this day an annual Mobbs Memorial Match is played by Northampton Rugby Club. In 1908 he led the East Midlands & Midlands XV to inflict the only defeat on the touring Australians. During the First World War he rose quickly to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, leading the Sportsmen's Battalion, the 7th Northamptonshire Regiment but was killed on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres on 31st July 1917

He began playing as a goalkeeper professionally at Preston North End in 1886 and ended his career at Stockport County in 1902
