Fielding - Henry ..... U.K ..... author of the novel Tom Jones which was published in 1749 he also founded the country's FIRST salaried police force in the same year. He became London's Chief Magistrate in the 1740s and co-founded these FIRST detectives, known as Bow Street Runners, with his half brother John who had been blinded in an accident when he was 19 years old. One of the constables, Joshus Brogden, doubled as the country's FIRST court reporter sending his dispatches from Bow Street Magistrates Court over which Henry Fielding presided. When Henry died John succeeded him and was known as the Blind Beak. When John was later knighted it was the FIRST time in history that men from society's lower ranks could rise to its upper echelons

Podola - Guenther Fritz Erwin ..... U.K ..... in 1959 he was the FIRST prisoner accused in a British court of murder, to claim that he was unfit to plead because of hysterical amnesia. Apart from some minor "windows of recollection" he claimed that he could remember nothing of his life prior to waking up in hospital after his somewhat violent arrest. A jury was brought in to decide on his claim and they found that he was NOT suffering from loss of memory. He was eventually found guilty and hanged in Wandsworth Prison on November 5th 1959. He not only made legal history, but gave a new word to the language of the law and the police - Podolatry - meaning leaning over backwards to be fair to a prisoner, especially a foreign one
