In 1988 Madeleine Portwood attended a seminar to discuss the increasing number of research papers suggesting that pupils exhibiting emotional and behavioural problems were likely to have varying degrees of neurological immaturity.
Having confirmed these findings by her own research she spent the next seven years working with dyspraxic children in County Durham with the aim of simplifying diagnosis and to see if any treatment could be provided. Her results are published in this second edition. In 1997 further research into young offenders was undertaken showing that nearly half those assessed in the prison population showed symptoms of dyspraxic. There are additional chapters describing the metabolic basis to the condition and studies with adults.
