Mad Max

Mad Max was made in 1979 on a very low budget. The film however, won wide acclaim, and is now considered to be THE classic Australian road movie.
Mad Max stars Mel Gibson in his first internationally successful role as Max Rockatansky, one of the last Main Force Patrol officers patroling a society on the brink of nuclear war in a super fast police car. He is responsible for the death of The Nightrider (played by Vince Gill), the crazed leader of a biker gang, whom he kills in a high speed chase.

Max's reaction to the bloody death of The Nightrider

The gang of bikers swear vengance against their mentor's death and under the new leadership of the psychopathic Toecutter (Hugh Keyes-Byrne) they brutally kill Max's friend Jim Goose (Steve Bisley).

Max is sickened by their actions and decides to quit the force to live in the peace and quiet of the countryside with Jessie (Joanne Samuel) his wife, and Sprog, his baby.

Unluckily, they soon run into Toecutter and his gang again.

Toecutter

The bikers kidnap Sprog and Toecutter taunts Jessie, but she manages to get the baby back and escape. The gang gives chase and cuts them down as they flee. The loss of his wife and child sends Max over the edge. He steals the Black on Black Pursuit Special Patrol car and pulls on his leathers once again with one thing on his mind ...... REVENGE!

Max catches up with the bikers and manages to kill off a few of them, before being ambushed . He gets shot through the knee but still kills another gang member, Bubba Zanetti (Geoff Parry).

Johnny The Boy

Only two of the gang are left, Johnny The Boy (Tim Burns) who killed Jim Goose, and Toecutter.

The chase is on

Max first chases Toecutter at break neck speed along the highway, only inches from his bike. Until, approaching the crest of a hill, an eighteen wheeler Kenworth truck comes the other way and gorily dispatches him, saving Max the bother.

The end of Toecutter

Max turns the car round and goes to seek out Johnny The Boy. After some days he eventually sees Johnny's bike parked at the scene of an accident. He goes down the bank and pulls his gun on Johnny as he is robbing the unfortunate driver of the pick-up of his boots. Max handcuffs Johnny's ankle to the suspension of the pick-up and sets up a booby trap using some of the wreckage and the fact that the fuel line is broken. He gives Johnny a hacksaw, and tells him it'll take 10 minutes to hack through the hand cuffs, but it'll only take 5 minutes to hack through his ankle. Johnny tells him he is mad, but Max doesn't listen and climbs back up the bank to the Pursuit Special.

"You're mad man... you think I look silly, don't you..."

Max heads off in the car, up the hill from the crash site and it's not long before there is a huge explosion which spells the end for Johnny, and the end for the bike gang too.
For Max it is only just beginning...
