This new version of Colin
McRae Rally really does take off where the last version finished. Despite
it still having the same feel as the first edition it has had a complete
face lift, the graphics have been vastly improved, incorporating new
rendering techniques and lighting effects, the game has been updated with
the newer cars, the Ford Focus is now included as well as the Peugeot 206.
There are now more stages
to choose from than before and if you can enable the cheat you will find
even more! The cheat also gives you some more cars, you can find many old
rally favourites such as the Peugeot 205, Lancia Stratos and the non-rally
Ford Puma.
As well as having the
choice to go on a full rally or enter in arcade mode the new version gives
a whole new meaning to the word ‘network play’ as it allows up to
eight players to go head to head over a LAN or even the internet!
Sadly they no longer
include the old rally school, this feature was quite useful for beginners
to Rally and the game, teaching you how to use the handbrake effectively
to help you slide the car round corners.

There is a obviously a
price to pay for those splendid graphics, they now recommend that you have
the minimum of an 8mb AGP graphics card, we have tested it on a Matrox
G100 8mb AGP with a PII400 and it runs acceptably, we would therefore
advise that if you are going to run it you will probably need something
like a PIII500 with a 16mb AGP graphics card.

Despite its hefty hardware
requirements the game is still well worth its money, if your computer is
quick enough and you liked the first edition this second coming of the
game is definitely for you!
