Quantum Consciousness

The truth is what you know, not what you are told to believe

What do we mean by ‘Quantum Mechanics’ ?

Quantum Mechanics can best be described as a precise mathematical description of the behaviour of fundamental particles. To date, all of its experimental predictions have been confirmed with great accuracy. Thus, the old world view of Newtonian Physics, now referred to as ‘Classic Physics’ has been surpassed by the emerging new world view which has quantum mechanics at its heart. Classic Physics has not been thrown on the scrap heap however and many of its postulates are still relevant and work for most things on the human scale. But it does not describe the behaviour of all observable outcomes, especially the way that light and electromagnetism work.

Depending on how it is measured, light can display the properties of both waves or particles. Waves are like undulations in the ocean of life. They are not localised, but spread out. They are not rigid, but soft and can interact with each other. Particles on the other hand are like snooker balls - they are hard in the sense that if you were able to knock them together with some force, they would annihilate each other, releasing great energy. This wave/particle duality also gives rise to an idea known as ‘Quantum Superimposition’ which means that the object is in a mixture of all possible states. How is this possible? Well, Quantum Mechanics, developed during the first few decades of the twentieth century attempts to explain why.

Wave-Particle Duality and co-existence

Electrons can behave as both particles and waves. As waves, they have no exact location but exist as ‘probability fields’. As particles, this probability field ‘collapses’ into a solid object existing in a particular place and time. Unmeasured or unobserved electrons behave in a different manner from those being measured or observed. When they are not measured, electrons behave as waves. When observed, they become particles. Our physical world is ultimately constructed out of elementary particles that behave in this way.

‘Observation plays a decisive role in the event and the reality varies, depending upon whether we observe it or not’

-Werner Heisenberg

What are the implications of this?

If the theory of quantum physics is correct, and countless scientific experiments indicate that it is, then this implies that we, as observers within these fields of potentiality are ‘creators’ of our reality. By our acts of observation and intention we are collapsing the electron wave forms into tangible particles that constitute the reality that we perceive. This ‘real’ world which we each experience is not ‘outside’ or ‘separate’ from us. Rather, we are part of it or one with it and it is what we experience inside our head that gives us the impression of solid, independent objects which appear to exist externally.

The power of Intention

Intentions shape our lives and continuously affect the world by guiding our actions. Intention involves directing the mind, which purpose, toward a particular object or outcome and presents opportunities for increasing our understanding of how we might consciously shape our lives. It brings into focus some of the more interesting and profound questions concerning the connections between mind, body and spirit leading us to further explore the influence of consciousness both directly and indirectly on individual and collective wellbeing. Aspects such as synchronicity and ‘coincidence’ take on new meanings and we can perhaps begin to recognise that we are continuously influencing events at the quantum level.

As White Feather and other spirit teachers have long explained - there are no accidents. Fate, chance and luck belong to the realm of superstition. The universe and our part within it is an ordered place and even if at the quantum level of infinite potential, it is difficult to accurately predict the outcome of events due to the apparent randomness of particle behaviour, this is only because we do not yet fully understand the laws operating at this level.

In conclusion - it appears that ‘we’ as individuals and collectively as the human race, along with all other sentient life forms, actively participate in the creation of that which we perceive as reality. Thus, we have the unlimited power to influence what we create and to change it if we do not like it. That perhaps, is an over simplification. But in essence that is what the study of quantum mechanics implies. Could it be that at long last, the fields of science and mysticism are coming together? If this is so, then mankind may indeed be upon the cusp of a new golden age of understanding and the current reality - or perhaps illusion would be a better description - is about to change.
