An attractive old market town situated in a valley, south of Guildford. The river Wey runs through Godalming and alongside it are the water meadows, called Lammaslands. The narrow streets have an interesting blend of 17th and 18th century buildings with more modern ones, for Godalming has long been a thriving town. The town's main trade was in wool and textiles and coaching inns provided respite for travellers between London and Portsmouth. It was the residents of Goldalming who were the first in the world to have a public electricity supply.
